The Core Difference: Specific Heat vs. Latent Heat - Ice Packs vs PCM Coolants
To understand which coolant is best, it helps to look at the physics behind how they work.
Water Packs (Specific Heat) for eCRT and CRT: Standard gel packs use a water-polymer mixture. They freeze at 0°C but, for eCRT and CRT applications, they are used in liquid phase and gradually absorb heat, steadily warming up or cooling down as they are used. They provide general temperature management but do not maintain a single, specific temperature.
Gel Ice Packs (Latent Heat): Gel Ice Packs are used to undergo a phase transition (from solid to liquid) to provide energy to the system. Instead of slowly heating up, a gel ice pack will absorb energy while holding at its specific phase point of 0°C. They are usually combined with chilled water packs, balancing the temperature in the system with the outside ambient temperature. Ice is not generally used in high insulation units such as VIP systems as the 0°C energy cannot balance effectively with outside ambient conditions creating elevated risk of cold-shocking product. Since less heat enters the system due to better insulation, the ice instead exchanges energy with the payload.
PCM Coolants (Latent Heat): PCMs are engineered to undergo a phase transition (from solid to liquid or vice versa) at an exact, predetermined temperature. Instead of slowly heating up, a PCM will absorb or release massive amounts of energy while hovering at its specific phase point, acting like an active thermostat inside your shipping container to maintain your payload at that predetermined temperature for longer.
Ice Packs: The Tried and True Workhouse
Traditional water-based and gel ice packs are the most widely used cooling medium in the logistics industry.
Best for:
Short-transit shipping (overnight or next-day deliveries).
Lower cost goods where the unit dose can be affected by packaging costs.

The Limitations:
Because the phase change temperature of water-based, and gel ice packs is around 0°C, they can’t sustain temperatures within the industry standard temperature ranges reliably on their own. They can also cause "cold shock" (overcooling and potentially freezing items that shouldn't be frozen) if they sit directly against sensitive products.

PCM coolants take the guesswork out of cold chain shipping. Because they can be formulated to phase change at precise temperatures (e.g., -15°C to -25°C, +2°C to +8°C, or CRT: +15°C to +25°C), they guarantee your payload temperature stays exactly where it needs to be.

The Limitations:
PCMs carry a higher upfront cost than standard gel packs. They also require specialized conditioning (freezing or thawing them to the exact phase temperature) to work properly. Not generally conditioned at their phase change temperature - they’re conditioned above or below depending on season, which can be a challenge.

What is your product's strict temperature threshold? If your item simply needs to be kept cold or warm, or between a wide label claim temperature range, gel packs might suffice. If it must be kept in tight window temperature over a long period with potentially challenging ambient conditions, a PCM is almost mandatory.
How long is the transit time? For longer duration transits, or shipments exposed to harsh ambient temperatures with limited infrastructure, PCMs, combined with higher insulation systems, offer a superior thermal buffer.
What is the value of the payload? The cost of medium, water or PCM, is minimal compared to the cost of replacing spoiled, temperature-abused freight. High-value items practically demand the predictability of PCMs.
