Puffin Packaging Leads The Way With Certified 100% British Wool Insulating Packaging Product

Puffin proudly announces its exclusive status as the only certified 100% British wool cold chain packaging company in the world.

A Certification Rooted in Innovation

The journey to developing the 100% pure British wool liners originated by a ground breaking Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the University of Huddersfield. This collaboration has been a success story illustrating the potential when academia and industry unite with one common goal, to enhance the Puffin wool liners, use less material and focus on making more sustainable. The KTP has not only driven the launch of Puffin’s 100% British wool insulating liners for cold chain packaging, but it has also fostered new relationships, opening avenues for innovation that promise to reshape the future of sustainable temperature-controlled packaging available from Puffin Packaging.

Celebrating British Wool and Sustainability

Puffin Packaging’s use of British wool is a proud nod to the rich heritage of British farming and a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability. Yannis Archbold, founder of Puffin Packaging states, “The struggle to find innovative sustainable uses for British wool was a discussion point and, in a time, when sustainability and ethical sourcing is imperative. The need for solutions that supports local farmers and preserves the tradition and integrity of British agriculture was critical. Creating our 100% British wool certified insulating liners are uniquely positioned to address this concern.”

Richard Alderson, Head of Wool Sales adds, “The work Puffin Packaging are doing will not only raise the profile of these wools but ensure going forward these previously underutilised types will start to realise higher returns to UK farmers, ensuring they are better rewarded for the work they do”.

Yannis Archbold founded Puffin Packaging in 2017 and the company has grown significantly. From its humble roots in a small domestic-sized garage, it now calls Morley, West Yorkshire home in its 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse where the British wool liners are created. Puffin Packaging is an innovative leader in sustainable packaging solutions, dedicated to revolutionising the cold chain industry with environmentally friendly, insulation products.

Yannis Archbold continues, “The choice to use British wool was an easy one as it fits with the values of Puffin Packaging. Our commitment to supporting the local economy and the British farming community not only champions environmental sustainability, but also provides another use for British wool bringing a traditional industry into modern supply chains. Working with The University of Huddersfield we have selected a perfect blend of Swaledale and Welsh Mountain sheep, truly celebrating these two breeds due to the coarseness and natural insulating qualities of their fleece”.

Richard Alderson continues, “Swaledale and Welsh Mountain are fantastic breeds with the Swaledale found mainly on the hills and moorlands of Northern England whilst the Welsh Mountain comes from the areas the length and breadth of Wales. They have to survive in some of the harshest conditions in the UK, which makes their wool perfect for insulation packaging as it protects them in the bitterest of winters whilst ensuring when temperatures increase they don’t overheat”.

British Wool and Puffin Packaging Certification

Puffin had a decision to make along the journey. The option was to use a blend of British wool with EU wool or other fibres, or to go 100% British. Robert Penkala, General Manager at Puffin Packaging confirms, “We wanted to show commitment to British farmers, so we chose to select a 100% British Wool solution. We have found the British wool to be a dream to work with across our manufacturing processes. This is due to the climate and hills the sheep are grazed on and means that the British wool is perfectly suited to the cold chain packaging solutions as the mountain sheep insulate and regulate their temperature naturally.”

The official certification from British Wool underscores a shared commitment and innovative approach to using British wool in a way that not only elevates the material’s value, but also contributes to finding new and meaningful markets for it.

Puffin Packaging invites retailers, producers and consumers to join in the sustainable revolution by choosing Puffin Packaging’s 100% British wool solutions for their cold chain packaging needs, the only 100% British wool cold chain packaging solution in the world.
